With almost 600,000 inhabitants, Dortmund is the biggest city in the Ruhr Region and one of the most dynamic cities in the new German economy. Formerly famous for its steel, coal and beer industry, in the meantime Dortmund has become an important technology location. In the year 2000, the City of Dortmund and ThyssenKrupp AG founded the dortmund-project as a PPP in order to transform Dortmund into a leading location for technology and business within Europe. The dortmund-project, which has become a unique network between the City, business and science, is characterized by the methodological approach of reacting quickly, investing, setting up self-sustaining systems and concentrating on specific themes and processes.

As a comprehensive and integrated approach, the dortmund-project comprises sectoral development, founders support, area development and human resources development. The dortmund-project is a part of the City of Dortmund Economic Development Agency, which works closely with companies, universities, R&D institutions and financial bodies and is focused on cluster development within micro and nano technology, logistics, IT, bio technology, production technology, health economy, business services and creative industries. Considering the importance of cluster development, the Agency is employing managers with specific knowledge and experience for every single cluster supported. This allows to work with companies intensively and respond to their needs.
