Interview with Virginie Pevere, AXELERA cluster

Friday 07 October 2011

We interviewed Ms. Virginie Pevere, Director of Research and Innovation at the AXELERA cluster, to find out further about the cluster and its relation with the city-region’s authorities.

Why is the EcoTech cluster important for Lyon?

In Lyon, there is a large number of EcoTech actors and clusters that are present with many companies working in that domain. In the chemical sector, there has been a shift in behaviour which has seen the industry look towards eco-technologies. Clusters are present both in the city and its greater area. For this type of cluster all the necessary elements, skills and conditions are present in the area for it to be a success. It is also important that actors are federated.

What type of cooperation exists between the cluster and the local authorities?

Grand Lyon is an active partner in the AXELERA cluster. It has been involved in the development of the cluster, especially in the draw-up of its content. However, the type of partnership the city-region holds is still to be formally defined. Although some activities undertaken by the cluster go beyond the city-region’s boundaries, it is still in its interest that it develops.

Does the cluster’s regional impact have a positive knock-on effect for the city?

The development of certain themes reinforces the city at a regional level. Although there is a regional impact, it gives the city certain specificity. There is a large number of companies in Lyon specialised in the chemical sector which turns it into a perfect breading ground for technological schools and institutions that will further reinforce the city’s reputation in the sector.
